WHAT happens to a teenage kid when the world he thought he knew suddenly changes? Find out in Little Brother by American author Cory Doctorow. It is a fascinating book for a new generation of sci-fi readers.

Marcus Yallow, 17, from San Francisco is much more comfortable in front of a computer than obeying the rules of society. Smart, fast and wise to the ways of the networked world, he has no trouble outwitting (骗过) his high school’s monitoring system. This way he and his friends get to head off to play a popular online game in real life.
While they are playing, a bomb explodes on the Bay Bridge. Marcus stops a military vehicle to get help for his injured friend, but this simple act throws him into a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) secret prison. There he is treated as a possible terrorist. He is eventually let go after four days, but his injured friend disappears.
When he returns, Marcus discovers that there are many “security measures” in place and that now all citizens are treated like potential terrorists. While some consider this government action necessary for public safety, Marcus sees this as a complete destruction of the rights he is supposed to have as a citizen.
He knows that no one will believe his story, which leaves him with only one thing to do: to take down the DHS himself. He helps organize a large network called Xnet to spread the truth, anonymously (匿名地).

The high-protein, low-carbohydrate(碳水化合物) diets many people turn to for weight loss might have potentially harmful long-term effects on the colon, a small study indicates.
In the study, UK researchers found that a protein-heavy, low-carb diet created certain changes in the colon that could contribute to colon cancer risk. The study itself does not show whether high-protein diets really raise the risk of any colon diseases, but the findings raise that possibility.
Diets relatively high in protein and lower in carbs have been shown to help heavy people lose weight. “People should not be discouraged from losing weight,” Dr. Flint said. However, he added, they should make sure that any weight loss plan includes adequate amounts of fiber and a high protein intake over months to years might have ill effects on the colon.

The findings are based on 17 overweight men who followed three short-term diets: a one-week menu plan to keep their weight; a four-week high-protein diet with reasonable amounts of carbohydrates; and a four-week high-protein diet low in carbs.
On average, the study found when the men were on the high-protein diets, they had higher levels of substances known as N-nitroso compounds (亚硝基化合物) and other metabolites (代谢物) that have been linked to cancer. And when they were on the high-protein, low-carb diet, they had lowered amounts of fiber-originated compounds thought to be protective against cancer.
Exactly what those changes might mean for a person’s health is not clear. But Flint said that the findings suggest that people should be cautious about consuming too much protein and too little fiber over a long period. In general, experts recommend that adults get about 28 grams of fiber per day―though it’s not known whether that’s enough for someone on a high-protein weight-loss diet.

BEIJING, March 9―The central government will require an additional three years of use for official vehicles for ministers and governors to reduce the costs of purchasing new cars, media have reported.
The new rule has been applied among all Party and government departments nationwide, the Beijing News reported on Tuesday. The new rule has not yet been made public, said Li,a member of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference National Committee.
Under the old rules, the cars used by minister-level officials could be replaced as often as every five years, Li said. These officials will also retain the same cars when they assume new posts, he added.
The new rule also reiterated (重申) that officials ranking below minister-or governor-levels should not be allocated cars. The cars possessed by their departments should be used on demand.
“It violates the rules for lower-ranking-even county-level-officials to be allocated cars,” Li said.
Purchases of vehicles for official use have been heavily investigated, as they account for a large expenditure of public funds every year.
A survey on the Web news www.省略 found 64 percent of respondents believed the new rule will be difficult to implement because it is related to officials’ interests.

“Local government departments had halted approvals for requests for such vehicles and had started to work on new quotas under the new rules,” Li said. “The future reform of official vehicle use will introduce market mechanisms and monetization.”
Premier Wen Jiabao said in the annual government work report on Saturday that expenditures on such vehicles will not increase in 2011 compared with a year ago.

London has become a cycle friendly zone after the launch of a new bike hire scheme. It has been designed to encourage more people to cycle in and around central London.
So how does it work? First you have to sign up to the scheme to be sent a key. The key will unlock one of the bikes, which are kept at docking stations in and around central London. You have to pay an access fee for the key and then you pay as you go, for the length of time you use the bike.
Transport for London, which runs the scheme, are hoping to have 6,000 bikes and 400 docking stations in place by the end of the year. The new hire system is hoping to ease congestion in London and is expected to generate up to 40,000 extra cycle trips a day into the city centre. London Mayor Boris Johnston launched the scheme and said London had been “filled with thousands of gleaming machines that will transform the look and feel of our streets and become as commonplace on our roads as black cabs and red buses”.
However, there have been a few problems since the scheme was launched last Friday. On the first day some people found they couldn’t dock their bike properly and their usage of the bike had not registered. Transport for London did admit they had been expecting a few “teething problems” and have said they wouldn’t charge for the first day as a “gesture of goodwill”. Some other people have criticized the lack of docking stations and locks for the bikes as well as the price it costs to hire the bicycles.

Historians say Harriet Tubman was born in the year 1820. Nobody really knows. But we do know that Harriet Tubman was one of the bravest women ever born in the United States.
From a very early age, Harriet knew how slaves suffered. At six years old, she was sent to the fields. Working outside not only made her body strong but also made her learn about the Underground Railroad, on which she helped hundreds of people escape from slavery later. She also learned many things from the other slaves, which one day would help her lead her people to freedom. She became more of a rebel (反叛者).
In 1844, at about age 24, she married a free black man named John Tubman. By now, Harriet was sure she wanted to try to escape. Suddenly, the time came. Her owner died. Though opposed by her husband, she decided to escape. With the help of the Underground Railroad, and through a variety of suffering she finally crossed the border into Pennsylvania, where slavery was banned.
Now that Harriet was free, she did not forget the hundreds of other slaves back in Maryland. Harriet traveled back and forth eighteen times, helping about 300 slaves escape into free territory. She became an expert at hiding from slave hunters. The people she helped called her Moses. At one time, anyone finding Harriet was promised $40,000 for catching her―dead or alive.
During the Civil War, Harriet Tubman went into enemy territory to spy for the North. She also served as a nurse. After four years of bloody fighting, the North won the war.
After the fighting ended, Harriet Tubman returned to Auburn, New York. She kept working. She traveled and gave speeches to raise money for better education for black children. She also worked for women’s rights and housing. Harriet Tubman died in 1913. She was about 93 years old. By that time, she was recognized as an American hero. The United States government gave a funeral with military honors for the woman known as Moses.

Farming is moving indoors, where the sun never shines, where rainfall is irrelevant and where the climate is always right. The perfect crop field could be inside a windowless building with controlled light, temperature, wetness, air quality and nutrition. It could be in a New York high-rise or a complex in the Saudi desert. It may be an answer to the world’s food problems.
The world already is having trouble feeding itself. Half the people on Earth live in cities, and nearly half of those―about 3 billion―are hungry or ill-fed. Food prices, currently increasing, are buffeted by dryness, floods and the cost of energy required to plant, harvest and transport. And prices will only get more unstable. Climate change makes long-term crop planning uncertain. Farmers in many parts of the world already are using water available to the last drop. And the world is getting more crowded: by mid-century, the global population will grow from 6.8 billion to 9 billion.
To feed so many people may require expanding farmland at the expense of forests and wilderness, or finding ways to completely increase crop output.
Gertjan Meeuws has taken the concept of a greenhouse a step further, growing vegetables and house plants in enclosed(封闭的)and regulated environments. In their research station, water flows into the pans when needed, and the temperature is kept constant. Lights go on and off, creating similar day and night, but according to the rhythm of the plant.
A building of 100 square meters and layers (层) of plants could provide a daily diet of 200 grams of fresh fruit and vegetables to the entire population of Den Bosch, about 140,000 people. Their idea isn’t to grow foods that require much space, like corn or potatoes.

Here sunlight is not only unnecessary but can be harmful. Plants need only specific wavelengths of light to grow. Their growth rate is three times faster than under greenhouse conditions. They use about 90 percent less water than outdoors agriculture. And city farming means producing food near the consumer, and there’s no need to transport it long distances.
1. What can we mainly learn from Paragraph 2?
A. The climate is worse and worse.
B. The city people live a hard life.
C. The world has difficulty feeding its people.
D. The world’s population is increasing fast.
2. The underlined word “buffeted” in Paragraph 2 means _______.
A. badly affected B. preventedC. demanded D. well achieved
3. Which of the following is true of the environments in the research station?
A. The temperature is often changed.
B. Sunshine is in great need for plants.
C. Day and night depends on plants.
D. Air quality is controlled by plants.
4. It can be inferred from the text that Gertjan Meeuws’s farming _______.
A. helps save sea water a lotB. is highly adaptable
C. resembles greenhouse agricultureD. suits the production of corn
5. What is the text mainly about?
A. Development of indoor farming. B. Great Revolution in farming.
C. Advantages of indoor farming.D. Sunless, rainless indoor farming.

The animated film Rio has recently come out in many different countries around the world. It is the latest film from Blue Sky Studios, which also made the Ice Age trilogy, and as in those three films, the main characters are talking animals―this time two macaws (a kind of parrot) called Blu and Jewel.
The story begins with Blu living in the house of his owner, Linda, who runs a bookshop in Minnesota in the north of the United States. Though born in Brazil, Blu was taken to the US by tropical bird smugglers when he was very young, and is comfortable in his quiet life with Linda. He is a rather anxious bird who doesn’t like new experiences very much and has never learned to fly.
One day Linda meets a bird expert called Tulio who tells her that Blu is one of a very rare species. In fact, he is so rare that there is only one other macaw of the same kind anywhere in the world: a female called Jewel who lives in the beautiful city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Tulio persuades Linda to take Blu to Rio, because getting him to meet Jewel is the only way of stopping their species from becoming extinct. The rest of the film tells the story of the relationship between Blu and Jewel (which doesn’t start well: she dislikes him at first) and the adventures they have in Rio, as well as the human relationship between Linda and Tulio.
At first, Blu finds Rio quite scary, but might his new experiences there change his personality? Could he even learn to fly? Blu again faces danger from bird smugglers, who capture him and Jewel, but the story is mostly very happy, with lots of jokes, music and dancing. Rio is also beautiful to look at, with many of the characters being colourful Brazilian birds (plus some other animals) and with the mountains, forests and beaches of Rio in the background.

As with many other animations in recent years, the voices of some of the characters, including Blu and Jewel, are those of famous actors and musicians. Blu’s voice is that of Jesse Eisenberg (who played Mark Zuckerberg, the founder of Facebook, in The Social Network) and Jewel’s is that of Anne Hathaway (who has starred in films such as The Devil Wears Prada and Alice in Wonderland).
1. The writer writes the passage to _______.
A. try to persuade people to watch the film
B. point out the common features of recent animations
C. tell people that Rio is a beautiful place
D. introduce a new animated film
2. In this passage _______ human characters of the new film are mentioned by name.
A. 2 B. 4C. 6 D. 8
3. Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?
A. Blue Sky Studios have made many animated films.
B. Many famous actors star in Rio.
C. The pleasant scenery of Rio adds to the beauty of the film.
D. Blu was caught by bird smugglers twice.
4. In the writer’s opinion, _______.
A. Rio is different from the other films made by Blue Sky Studios
B. the new experiences will change Blu’s personality
C. the film is worth seeing
D. animals including birds should be well protected
5. The underlined words “extinct” in the third paragraph probably means “ _______ ”.
A. rare B. dying outC. alone D. sold
